Pelat Library

At Pelat Press, we believe that stories shape our understanding of the world, bridging cultures, ideas, and experiences. This week, we wanted to take a moment to share something personal: our favorite books. Just as we gather around a table to share a meal, we gather around these stories, each one nourishing our minds and hearts in its unique way. We reflect on how the simple act of sharing can reveal so much about who we are and where we've been. Whether in Singapore or Tehran, the thoughtfulness in our choices — from the books that stay by our bedside to the ones we return to time and again — speaks to our individual journeys and the connections we make along the way.

What book has stayed with you recently?

Joshua: “I’m always drawn to books that challenge my perspective, so recently, I’ve been revisiting The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran. Its timeless wisdom offers something new every time I read it.”

Shafina: “For me, it’s Palace Walk by Naguib Mahfouz. The novel beautifully captures the complexities of family life and tradition in a changing world, portraying the resilience and strength of its characters in the face of societal expectations and personal challenges.”

How do your reading habits change based on where you are?

Joshua: “My approach to reading is much like my approach to hosting — it’s thoughtful and intentional. The setting definitely influences my choices; when I’m traveling, I lean towards lighter reads that complement the journey. But no matter where I am, I make sure to take time to immerse myself in a good book.”

Shafina: “I’m still settling into life in New York, so my reading has been a bit more eclectic lately. I’m exploring new genres, trying to find what resonates with my current environment. But no matter where I am, I always make time for a good story, especially when I’m back home in Cairo.”

What is your go-to reading spot?

Joshua: “I love curling up on the couch with a cup of tea and my latest read. There’s something comforting about that routine, no matter where I am.”

Shafina: “I have this cozy nook in my apartment with a big window. It’s my sanctuary, where I can get lost in a book and forget about everything else.”

What book would you recommend to a friend?

Joshua: “The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is always a favorite. It’s a book that inspires and encourages you to pursue your dreams, no matter how impossible they may seem.”

Shafina: “I’d recommend The Forty Rules of Love by Elif Shafak. It’s a beautiful story that intertwines the past and present, exploring love in its many forms.”

Just as we gather around a meal, sharing our favourite books is a way to connect, to offer a piece of ourselves to others. What stories have shaped you? Join us in this conversation and let’s continue to explore the world through the pages of our favourite reads.
